As the founder of Taylored Tours, it’s essential for me to stay up to date with the latest travel trends and explore destinations firsthand, ensuring that I can provide my clients with the best experiences possible. Recently, I had the privilege of visiting the enchanting region of Puglia, Italy, and let me tell you, it was an absolute delight.

Puglia borders the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea, and in the south, it kisses the Gulf of Taranto and the Strait of Otranto. It has a population of just over 4 million within an area of 7,469 square miles. Interestingly, Puglia is one of the largest and most populated of the 20 regions, yet it remains an enigma to many outside of Italy.

One of the highlights of my trip was the opportunity to meet and partner with local hosts, private drivers and guides. These individuals, with their deep knowledge and passion for their land, opened up a world of authentic experiences for me and my clients.

They shared insights into the region’s history, culture, and traditions, ensuring that our time in Puglia was immersive and meaningful.

I had the privilege of meeting the representatives from Trenitalia (the major train system in Italy) and being treated to a private tour of the new lounge at the Rome airport. Not only that, but I also received a private escort on the train and a tour of all the different classes of cars.

This firsthand experience will definitely help me find the perfect fit for my clients. So grateful for this!

When it comes to Puglia, one cannot ignore the incredible food and wine that the region has to offer. Puglia’s culinary scene is a sensory delight, with a strong focus on simplicity and local ingredients. From freshly caught seafood to farm-to-table dishes bursting with flavor, every meal felt like a celebration of the region’s gastronomic heritage.

And let’s not forget the wine! Puglia’s vineyards produce some of the most exquisite wines I’ve tasted, perfectly complementing the local cuisine. Puglia is the largest wine-producing region in Italy, making it a paradise for wine lovers. I visited several wineries and explored rolling vineyards, many were family-run wineries. As a vineyard owner myself, I greatly enjoyed talking with the local winemakers.

When you travel to Puglia, be sure to savor the traditional Apulian wines, including Primitivo and Negroamaro (so good!).

I had the incredible opportunity to explore several olive orchards and indulge in delightful olive oil tastings. Puglia truly stands out as one of the main regions in Italy renowned for its olive oil production. In fact, it proudly holds the title of the largest producer of olive oil in the country, responsible for approximately 40% of Italy’s total production.

I couldn’t help but be amazed at the age of some of the trees that have stood the test of time. These ancient olive trees, some dating back centuries, exude an aura of wisdom and resilience. It was truly awe-inspiring to witness the beauty and grandeur of these living treasures.

I plan these experiences for my clients, not only for the chance to indulge in the finest olive oil tastings, but also to witness the ancient trees and the rich heritage they represent.

During my visit, I had the pleasure of exploring some of the most charming towns in Puglia.

Lecce, known as the “Florence of the South,” captured my heart with its ornate baroque architecture and vibrant atmosphere. It was like stepping back in time as I wandered through its narrow streets, stumbling upon hidden gems at every turn.

Otranto, a picturesque coastal town, offered breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea. The town’s rich history and stunning natural landscapes made it a perfect spot for exploring and soaking in the coastal charm. The coastal breeze and the mesmerizing turquoise waters left me in awe.

My journey also took me to Grottaglie, a town renowned for its ceramics. I couldn’t resist exploring the workshops and witnessing local artisans skillfully crafting pottery by hand. This encounter allowed me to establish collaborations with talented ceramicists, offering my clients an opportunity to try their hand at pottery making or purchase unique pieces as souvenirs.

Another highlight of my trip was a side excursion to the captivating city of Matera, situated just across the border in the neighboring region of Basilicata. Known for its ancient cave dwellings, breathtaking vistas, and captivating history, Matera offers a truly immersive experience.

I visited boutique hotels and luxury caves, discovering unparalleled accommodations for my clients who seek a touch of exclusivity and luxury.

Throughout my journey in Puglia, I took meticulous site visits to various accommodations scattered across the region. I also had the pleasure of residing in Masserias, traditional fortified farmhouses that have been transformed into luxurious accommodations.

I discovered exceptional trulli accommodations, ensuring my clients can experience the magic of staying in these unique structures. These traditional stone huts with conical roofs are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and I found myself captivated by the architecture and the stories hidden within these ancient dwellings.

Each property had its distinct character, blending modern comforts with traditional aesthetics, and I can now confidently recommend the perfect accommodation “taylored” to my clients’ preferences.

My journey through Puglia was truly a feast for the senses. From the captivating landscapes to the warm-hearted locals, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery. The experiences and partnerships that I built during this trip have equipped me with invaluable insights that will undoubtedly enhance the travel experiences of my clients.

With Puglia’s rich history, delectable cuisine, and unique cultural offerings, I am eager to share this hidden gem with my clients.
