5 Ways Travel Has Changed My Life

Nice to Meet You!

I’m Cindi Taylor, the founder of Taylored Tours. I am based in Durango, Colorado and I design “taylored” vacations for clients all over the country.

I was fortunate to grow up traveling. My parents always had a vacation planned for us, whether it was a weekend getaway to our farm or a ski trip to Utah. We always had a vacation to look forward to and often the anticipation of having the trip planned was just as awesome as actually taking the trip.

Travel has changed my life in many ways and it is why I love doing what I do. Read on to learn how travel can change YOUR life…

1. I’ve Become More Sociable

My dad never met a stranger and he talked to everyone when we traveled. It wasn’t unusual for us to have dinner with someone my dad had met earlier on the plane. When I was a kid, this was somewhat embarrassing to me because I was extremely shy. Fast forward to today and I realize that I inherited a lot of his curiosity and the desire to learn more about people and their cultures. I was always a little nervous about meeting and opening up to new people. However, every time I did open up when I traveled, I quickly realized how much easier it is to meet people abroad than at home. I often experienced that our mindsets were well-aligned, allowing our conversations to flow more smoothly. I met some of my closest friends while traveling. Today, it doesn’t scare me at all to start random conversations with strangers. And now my husband is the one who is embarrassed (haha).

2. I Am More Open-Minded

This was one of the most important life lessons I learned. Being open-minded means being willing to try new things or hear and consider new ideas. By meeting so many fellow travelers from different backgrounds and encountering new and interesting experiences, I learned how to keep an open mind. I became more receptive to trying new things (things I would’ve never tried in my ‘normal’ life) and embracing new perspectives. For example, during my very first trip to Ireland, I didn’t have an agenda. If you know me, you know I plan “everything”, so this was huge for me. As I traveled across the country I stayed in B&Bs and asked each host if they had a few days off, where would they go…and that’s where I went! Based on their recommendations, I discovered some amazing local spots that I never would have found in a “Rick Steves” or a “Frommers” book and after learning about their culture, my view on life was changed.

3. I Have Become More Self-Confident

Traveling requires some confidence, and I learned that the hard way. There have been many challenges along the way. I have gotten lost multiple times, taken the wrong train, had flights canceled, and I have been extremely sick while traveling. These uncomfortable situations helped me to become more thick-skinned and confident. I learned to not let my emotions stand in the way, and instead made the best out of every trip. Inevitably, traveling occasionally presents challenges and unpleasant situations. However, being more self-confident makes it easier to deal with them.

4. I Now Value Experience Over Things

Since I have been hooked on traveling, I understand its true power….I know that looking up at the Eiffel Tower or seeing the beaches of Normandy out-values any merchandise I could ever possibly purchase. Instead of buying a luxurious new car, I invest in what’s more important to me—seeing places I haven’t been to yet and immersing myself in new cultures. Travel doesn’t become something I do—it’s a way of life.

5. I Learned To Live In The Moment

Whether it was walking through the rolling vineyards of Tuscany for the first time or experiencing the standing stones in Scotland, traveling has taught me to take in the moment of awe and make the most of it. Traveling has been a feast for my eyes and it has made me stop and live in that second, minute, and moment. It’s hard to think about my latest text message when I am halfway across the world visiting places I have never been to before and seeing spots I have only read about. Traveling has taught me to unplug, explore and discover new parts of myself.
